Staff report • Dec 11, 2018 at 1:13 PM

KINGSPORT — Police are searching for a man who reportedly tried to push $1,000 worth of stolen merchandise out of Walmart, then pulled a knife when confronted by loss prevention personnel.

According to a Tuesday press release, the incident occurred Sunday morning at the store on West Stone Drive. Employees had observed the suspect loading various clothing and tools into a shopping cart throughout the store, then pass all the checkout lines without attempting to pay.

When stopped by Walmart personnel, the man allegedly reached into his pile of loot to grab a knife that was removed from its packaging. According to Kingsport Police Department records, he stated, "I'm poor, I need this," then pulled the weapon back as if he was "going to do something."

Ultimately, the suspect did not swipe at anyone. Instead, he placed the knife back in the shopping cart and left the store empty handed.

Surveillance video captured images of the man. Anyone who recognizes him is asked to call KPD detectives at (423) 229-9429 or Kingsport Central Dispatch at (423) 246-9111.
